I've finally got around to starting my Sockapaloooza socks, and they're a little on the wild side, but I think they'll work out. My pal wanted something fun and bright. I'm knitting Conwy from KOTR with Socks That Rock and the color and pattern are this close to being too much. I love them so much though that I'm going to have trouble parting with them, so I think they're good enough for the swap.

If these showed up in your mailbox would you love them? Like them? Tolerate them? Hate them?
Since I'm really trying to work on my photography, I'm joining some Flickr pools. Here's the one and only thing I've done and it's not even a good photo. It is, however, my very favorite corner of our apartment. It's the giant queen plus crib mattress family bed setup.

Being a neo-hippie in Houston is very fun, since the whole natural mothering thing is not that common down here. Everyone gets more sleep this way, too. At a play group today I met a woman wearing her baby and practically tripped over myself going over to meet her. I think that she was pretty happy to meet me, too, so hopefully I'll now have a friend who understands nursing a toddler.

Oooh, I love them! The colors are very pretty, I can't wait to pick up some Socks That Rock at the Maryland Sheep & Wool festival. I've heard the yarn is awesome. I'm sure your pal will love them.

I would just about die of happiness if those socks showed up in my mailbox :).
Family bed rocks. Although after three years and no end in sight, I am looking forward to being alone with my husband again someday! One thing I love about living in NE Portland is that AP moms are quite common. When I lived in LA, however, not so much. I had a similar experience when wearing Sydney in a sling at a plant nursery in CA - a woman came up to me to talk about AP-ing and said she was delighted to see me babywearing since it was so rare around there.

Love the socks. Socks are the one place where you can test the boudries of wildness. My clothes can get a bit boring but my socks are always fun.
I wonder if you are trying to lure your pal out to comment and learn her opinion before sending them. Very clever.

We have a family bed with our 2 1/2 year old. Even though it isn't always the easiest thing, it has really worked out so well for us.

Family bed here too - and we also did the "sidecar" thing with the crib mattress pushed next to the bed.
Don't worry about their sleeping habits later on, either. My kids are now 7 and 9 and quite readily go to bed in their own rooms, read on their own for a few minutes, and go to sleep, no problem at all. I think the security they felt as babies and toddlers stays with them even when they're ready (sniff) to be on their own.

I like the socks. They are very fun!
What a coincidence, I was just reading about the benefits of baby wearing in my Child Development book last week. I'm glad you meet someone else you shares your views on raising children and you don't have to feel like the only neo-hippie in Houston :)

hey there girlie! there is absolutely nothing wrong with nursing a toddler! i lived in northern (way northern Cali.) and it was hippieville up there! everyone wore there baby and nursed until the child weaned itself! for some reason both of my childern just happened to prefer sleeping through the ight and by themselves at 8 weeks old.....i feel pretty lucky on that one ;)
LOVE the sock pal socks!

Those socks are so cute and colorful. I'm jealous of your pal. As for sleep sharing, I think it is great. If it weren't for the family bed nobody in my house would get much sleep. I think more folks sleep share than they like to admit, you get too many admonishing looks. I even catch myself apologising when asked the dreaded question, "Does he sleep throught the night?"

The socks are gorgeous. I think they're nicer than what I'm knitting for my sockpal (goes and feels slightly inadequate, but, this pal has 10" feet, and I'm nearly on the second heel, toe-up).

The socks are gorgeous! I would be thrilled to find them in my mail box. Which colorway are you using? (Sorry if you've told us already and I'm just being a dolt.)
One of the best pieces of parenting advice I ever read was to trust your instincts - you know what's best for your family. And if that is a family bed, then do it. I'm glad you've met another mom who seems to share your parenting views! That is a treasure indeed!

When we had our little girl (first and only so far!) two and a quarter years ago, our room looked exactly the same! She slept there right next to me till she started rolling around (about 5 or 6 months) then went into a cot still right beside me. I HIGHLY recommend this, as it is SO easy to feed in the middle of the night - neither baby or mum (OR dad!) have to wake up fully which makes for happy families. When she turned one she kicked *us* out of the room (wanted to have her own space, and was happy as can be when she got it), weaned herself at 17 months, and is now a two-and-a-quarter year old who loves going to bed and has never in her life woken up crying (oh, maybe literally two or three times). And, no she's not a spoilt brat. The Victorian era which seperated parents and kids has a lot to answer for.

I think the socks are nice. They are springy and cheerful without being over-the-top bright. I'm sure your sock pal will love them.
I'm so glad I ran into your blog (via Alison over at The Blue Blog). I've been wanting to make Festive ever since I saw it in Knitty! What a great pattern.

Great socks! And family bed is the bomb! My youngest is almost 20 months old and still sleeps right next to me. They all did until they made it clear they wanted to be in their own bed. And the same attitudes toward nursing and family bed are here in Louisiana so I can relate.

I'm awful at knitting, partly because I've never given it much of a try, but we've got the natural parenting thing and the Houston thing in common!
