I finished the first cable & rib sock!

The colors weren't right in this picture, so I hopped out onto the porch in the middle of a rainstorm to take a natural light shot. I wasn't about to let that sock touch concrete! See, sock pal, I'm looking out for you! I just love these colors. The variation is so subtle that it's truly hard to capture it in photo form.

I just did a normal heel and toe, which I think makes the sock much more wearable. The heel design was just weird with little yo holes and decreases in the center of the heel, while the toe had some random purl stitches, maybe to act as reminders where to decrease? Who knows. I just know that I like modern sock knitting techniques.
I also started Picnic, the denim afghan I was going to start this fall. It jumped on my needles and there's nothing I could do to stop it. I'm going to do one square a day, which will let me finish the knitting in October. The seaming may take years, but I'm just going to pretend that isn't an issue yet.
Here's Monday's block, Tweedy Rib, the first of ten in this pattern:
Tuesday's block (and today's, too), Patio, one of two:
In blog news, I finally figured out how to get typepad to mail me my comments. So now I'll be a good blogger and write back to people who comment instead of thinking about clicking on the comment, getting the address, pasting it into mail and never actually doing any of it. See, just over a year ago I was a technically competent graduate student and now it takes me months to turn on a simple feature. Motherhood's an interesting game, no?
And I feel all cool today because I get Dooce's title reference.

You know when you give birth, brain cells leave you body with the baby!!
You sock looks awesome.

I did the funky heel on my cable and rib sock... halfway down the gusset I was disgusted with it and frogged it. Wah! I agree... traditional heels and toes are the way to go.

The sock looks gorgeous.
I am in afghan-seaming hell myself right now. Seaming takes longer than knitting up the squares!
